Brittany Murphy
Posted on 2009-12-27 05:25:27
When news broke last week that actress Brittany Murphy died of natural causes, my immediate thought was that 32 year old women don't die of natural causes, there had to be something else. Days later, news came out that she died of a heart attack brought on by prescription drug use. While we may never know exactly what it was that caused her death or if that is even true, we can only speculate what happened. After all, reports say she had a mixture of 10 different prescription drugs in her bedroom, some of which were for her mother, but she may have been taking. It sounds very similar to what happened to Michael Jackson this summer.
Yes, drugs do kill, whether prescribed, taken over the counter, or purchased illegally. Yet many people in our society think they save you and make your life better. While there are certain situations where drugs are necessary, there are more situations where drugs are unnecessary. Too many people in our society today rely on drugs because they are making poor lifestyle decisions. High blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes are a few examples of conditions brought on by poor decisions, usually from eating too much of the wrong food, not enough of the right foods, and not getting enough exercise or rest.
Add to that, 90% of the people in our society never visit a chiropractor and never get adjusted, so most likely have a nervous system that is stressed out and not working properly. How do you live an optimally functioning life when your body isn't functioning at its best? Taking drugs is not the answer. I don't know if people will ever learn that they need to look to within themselves for better health and to take responsibility for their own health. Drugs don't heal, only the body does, and interference from horrible nutrition and spinal misalignment will cause problems. Don't take drugs to fix that. Go visit a chiropractor, get adjusted, and start leading a healthy lifestyle.
Writer's Block
Posted on 2009-12-22 13:57:40
Months ago I had promised myself that I would "blog" at least once a week. I think it's good to get my thoughts out there, its good for patients and friends to know what I am thinking, and it is apparently good for search engines. I'm still learning all that part though.
It's been more than a week since I last wrote, only because I can't think of what to write about. Do you really want to hear success stories of patients? Or do you want to hear good motivational stuff? (or is that both?) So, that's why I get stuck, because I just didn't know. I actually have a good one planned for next week, being the end of the year .... but that is a week away! So, for now you get the writer's block blog.
I've been thinking about karma lately, and just doing the right thing no matter what. Being polite, being courteous, being respectful, being honest. I mean, if you don't....won't bad things come back to you? If so, it makes you wonder what will happen to Tiger Woods in the next year or more, as well as Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, and other professional athletes who have done wrong.
What about the everyday person? Are you doing what's right or not? Basically I write this because recently I was the "victim" of somebody doing something just plain unethical and immorale. It didn't hurt me in any way, just sort of made me quickly change plans as a business owner. So, I just wonder what will come back to that person days, weeks or years down the road. If you believe in karma, then they will face bad karma themselves. Who knows.
Phew....writers block...always makes you feel better.
7th Graders
Posted on 2009-12-13 12:42:19
This week I spoke to two class of 7th graders at a local middle school, talking about chiropractic and a career as a Chiropractor. I have been doing this for several years and it always is fun. These kids totally pay attention, they answer my questions, they volunteer for a game we play, and they always learn something. One of their homework assignments is to write me a thank you note, and then the teacher gives me these letters.
The letters are always typed out and it amazes me at how much they remember. They don't take notes during the class, yet a vast majority of the letters repeat back to me specifically what I have taught them. They learn how many bones there are in the body (206), how many muscles (650) and how the brain communicates with the body through the spinal cord. They learn that headaches are not "normal" and that poor posture and a lifetime of bumps and falls (up to 7thh grade at least) can cause spinal subluxations.
I love it when they end the letter with either "I want to go to a chiropractor now" or "I may want to be a chiropractor when I grow up." That's great, they have learned something they never knew before! Certainly I get the kids who write they have no interest in becoming a chiropractor, but that is okay, at least they have learned something.
So, I wonder what happens when they go home and tell their parents what they have learned. Most of the letters indicate they have done that, and I know I have taught them something important if they are at least telling their parents what they were taught. I love being able to teach these kids because they are so attentive and truly appreciate me coming in. It is a fun and very worthy experience.
12 Days of Christmas
Posted on 2009-12-06 14:41:31
For 12 days (office days) prior to Christmas, we will be celebrating in our office by giving away goodies each day to our patients. This is for no other reason than to have fun and to give back, and to thank our patients for choosing our office. So far this past week, we gave out coupons for a free first visit (we've never done that before), as well as candles, and then yesterday was our third annual PJ's & Pancakes party. So, you could say we gave away pancakes.
It was a fun day, as it always is. The whole staff wore our PJ's and it was great to see all the kids (and many parents) come in wearing their flannel PJ's. We made pancakes to order, had OJ, oranges, hot cocoa, tea and coffee. It's always a nice morning to hang out with the people I care about and who care about themselves.
So, for nine more days this month, we'll be giving away goodies on your visits (not on Tuesday's though). Come on in and see what you will receive!
