Breech babies & Chiropractic
Posted on 2010-02-27 12:43:46
In the past two weeks, I've had two new patients in my office, both pregnant, who came in because their babies were in the breech position, meaning their head was up and their feet & bottom were down. That is not the ideal way to be born, so these women learned that chiropractic care could help with this, and hopefully avoid a C-section birth. The Webster Technique is a very specific technique that was developed for in-utero constraint, and when certified in this (which we are), many times you can help the woman.
It's important to note that we aren't turning the baby, and if any Chiropractor tells you they are turning the baby -- then run out of the office and find a Chiropractor that really knows what they are doing. The adjustment is very specific, and focuses on removing subluxations, balancing out the pelvis, as well as the muscles and ligaments, which reduces the restraint. In a majority of cases, the baby moves on its own to a head down position. However, there are times when the baby just won't flip and they stay breech. There is one OB in Atlanta who will deliver breech babies, however most will not and instead, schedule the mom for C-sections. That is never the ideal way, especially for the mom who was planning and hoping for an unmedicated, natural birth.
So who do you know that is pregnant and the baby isn't head down? Tell them about The Webster Technique and our office. Chiropractic can help! It is very satisfying to be able to help people, and in the case of pregnant women, you are really helping two people during the birth process. It is a wonderful thing.
Chiropractic for runners
Posted on 2010-02-10 19:09:16
Recently we've had a few new patients in our office who are runners. One is training for an upcoming marathon and we were talking about doing our long runs in preparation for the race. Considering I have been adjusted regularly for the past 16 years, I cannot imagine NOT being adjusted, particularly when it comes to my running health.
You see adjustments help a person in so many ways -- reduced nerve interference, better range of motion, less body stiffness, improved performance, and less chance of injury. When it comes to running, all of these are so important in your overall performance. There is a particular adjustment that works really well for runners (come in and experience it!), as we constantly pound our bodies on the pavement as we add on the miles.
When you are relying on your body to get you ahead every day, why wouldn't you want to be adjusted? Don't you want to be the best you can be? No we can't make you run 5 minute miles if you don't have the abilty and don't train for it, but chiropractic adjustments will help a runner improve their performance, by allowing yourself to be as healthy and pain free as possible. When you are healthy and everything is working right, assuming you work hard and train properly, it will help a runner.
So if you run (and even if you don't), ask us how we can help you become the best YOU possible!
Running and Chiropractic
Posted on 2010-02-02 05:37:53
Last week I went out for a 16-mile training run (yes that's part of training for a marathon) and I ran on some trails, which is my favorite place to run. Instead of avoiding cars and traffic lights, you are avoiding deer, squirrels, rocks, and roots. It is much more peaceful than the roads, and easy to get "lost" in time, thus a 16 mile run seems easier than being in traffic.
During this run, there were a few times where I stumbled on roots and almost fell down. Whenever that happens, it's pretty much a clue to myself that I have to get adjusted. Sound crazy? You see, my left foot just wasn't coming up enough causing it to get caught on roots and rocks more easily. So, I'd stumble and catch myself and keep on running. It never happens with my right foot, just the left side.
On Friday I got my feet adjusted and you could see an immediate difference in how my foot was moving. Prior to the adjustment, it was a little restricted and afterwards, all of that was removed. I probably should have got adjusted before the run to save me from stumbling, but it was effective either way.
Chiropractic and running go very well together. Yes I am biased, but anyone who runs needs to include chiropractic care as part of their training program. It will help your body be much more efficient, prevents injuries, improves performance, allows the nerves to flow to the muscles and organs so much better, and can help prevent stumbling on roots! If you don't run, chiropractic can still help your body in so many ways. Ask us about it sometime.
More later, gotta run....
